Unfortunately, due to social media trends and T.V. reading habits are diminishing among kids day by day. The kids are fond of watching T.V. Have you ever thought about why is it happening? There are so many reasons. The nuclear family and the pressure of jobs on parents are among the main reasons that parents are not able to give them proper time. Moreover, parents are not trained in nurturing reading habits in their kids at home. Nurturing reading habits among kids is not an easy task. Kids are curious and try to imitate their parents about what they do in life. Reading stories books at bedtime and reading the stories books in front of them at an early age. This will help them develop new words every day. Books should be attractive and appealing. The key to encouraging reading habits in kids is reading with them at home from a young age. By reading together often, your child will learn firsthand the joys reading can bring, helping him or her develop a motivation to read.

Why does your kid hate reading? Have you ever tried to find the reason? What are they interested in? Let us find out some ways by which you can enhance their reading habits. Let us dive into the method and techniques to improve the reading habits of your kids:

Keep on Reading while going out

Parents go out of home and while traveling, you should read boards and wall writing and encourage your kids to read. I adopted this method with my kids when they were kids of two years and the kids responded. This became their habit of reading on road, on shops’ boards, and hoarding. This technique helped them to improve their reading habits.

Children are interested to be on top

You should always take care of children’s interests. Don’t try to read if they are not interested. Kids like cartoon books and other books which look different to them. Kids learn what they observe. To act as a role model in front of your child and also read in front of them. Whether you love books, graphics, or magazines, let your child see you reading. If you are excited about reading, your child is likely to catch your eagerness. Motivate your child to join you with their book when you are reading.

Make Reading a fun

Children love fun so, provide them the books which look funny to them. They like to join letters in different ways. Therefore, provide them with charts and toys in their room. Surround your kids with books. Fill your home with books as the kids start learning reading at home before going to school. Kids are always curious to read something different. They develop an interest in reading and become habitual in reading and ultimately start learning.

Fix a time daily for your kids

Every parent should fix a time for their kids for reading something to them. From the day your newborn comes home, you can start raising a reader. Babies respond to the soothing rhythm of a voice reading aloud, as well as to being cuddled on a warm lap. If you make reading part of your daily routine, your child is likely to grow up looking forward to it. Bedtime is also a good idea to tell them stories before they sleep.

Create a Reading space for your kid

Parents should provide a space for the kids at home where they feel connected, it can be a small space like a couch or a small room. Picking a comfortable space that has enough light and room to keep a book or two can help your child connect reading with warmth and comfort.

Ask questions and let the kid answer

Questioning is a good technique to engage your kids to learn more things. You can ask them to find an answer in the book of their interest. The more questions you ask your kid, the more interest in reading will be developed.

Act as a role model

You must also have a habit of reading at home. They always imitate you and start reading. So, be a role model in front of your kid. Find books that grip you and keep you going. Even if they aren’t literary masterpieces, they make you want to read — and that’s the goal here.

Support Your Child in Reading.

If your child has difficulty reading and gets frustrated, take a step back and see where he or she is struggling. Talk with his or her teacher and address the issue as soon as possible.

Use the above tips to get your child interested in reading so he or she can become an even better learner. With a little focus and direction, you can help give your child the reading boost he or she needs. Therefore, you make reading fun for your kids instead of making it a frustration for them.

What are the types of reading habits?

Reading habits are a well-planned and deliberate pattern of study which has attained a form of
consistency on the part of students toward understanding academic subjects and passing
examinations. Reading habits determine the academic achievements of students to a great extent. Both
reading and academic achievements are interrelated and dependent on each other. Students often come
from different environments and localities with different levels of academic achievement. Therefore,
they differ in the pattern of reading habits. While some students have good reading habits, others tend
to exhibit poor reading habits. Academic achievement means how much knowledge the individual has
acquired from the school

Can we excel in our life without reading books?

In a world without books, people will turn to television for leisure, which will undoubtedly consume most of their time. Television might seem like a relaxing way to unwind, but when we get too engrossed in it, we start ignoring the real world, content to stay in the world of virtual reality, which is unhealthy. Even in the book, Mildred, the protagonist’s wife is so consumed by the screens that the outside world and its realities no longer concern her, and the thought of losing her entertainment sends her into a frenzy.

Research indicates that being glued to screens might lead to higher aggression levels and lower verbal reasoning abilities in children, and prove to be bad for the health of adults. Suffice to say, without books to ground us, we might revert to simply being idle minds who are content with mindless entertainment without any thought about its repercussions. We might remain entertained, but we will, most definitely, be ignorant, with a heavy blow to our psyche.

What are the methods to assess a good reader?

There are several different methods of assessing reading. However, before assessing readers; teachers need to determine the purpose of the assessment and the specific types of knowledge to be assessed. Some methods of assessment such as journals, portfolios, reading logs, and checklists are ongoing and more student and learner-centered. More traditional methods of assessment include multiple-choice questions, recall protocols, cloze tests and completion exercises, vocabulary tests, open-ended short-answer questions, and authentic tasks. These kinds of tests are often used as achievement tests to determine student mastery of the material taught in class. When writing tests, teachers should ensure that course objectives are considered, that tests are valid, reliable, and practical, that tests are free from cultural and linguistic bias, and that factors that may interfere with performance such as anxiety, lack of experience with testing materials, and time limitations have been carefully considered.

Seven Habits of Good Readers

  • A good reader always tries to form a picture in his mind of what he had read. This way, he can do comprehension easily. He will try to form relationships between incidents and characters.
  • “Activating schema” allows students to make connections with previous experiences to
better comprehend the text. Students can make text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world
connections. Making connections allows students to understand and remember what
    was read.
  • Questioning gives students a purpose for reading and writing. Students may ask
questions before, during, or after reading and writing. There are several different types
of questions that students can ask: “right there” questions, “in my mind” questions, “on
my own” questions, and “author and me” questions. Initial questioning pushes students
towards asking deeper questions or determining answers.
  • Inferring is what a student does to comprehend what is not exactly written in the text.
Students conclude by using prior knowledge combined with what they have
    already read in the text.
  • Determining importance is when students decide which information is the most
valuable to the text. As students determine importance, they will be able to remember
details about the text and/or activate schema to understand the major points being
    offered by the author.
  • Monitoring for meaning is when students regularly stop and review what was read to check for understanding. Students are not reading for speed or to read an
entire text; rather, they are reading to comprehend the text.
  • Synthesizing is when students take information from different places in the text and
make new meaning out of it. Students that synthesize can convey the author’s
message and support their thinking with evidence from the text.

It is further recommended that courses like communication skills should be made mandatory for all first-year students to read at least two novels or fiction each semester and, non-scoring courses for all
level 200 and 300 students for a semester but students need to pass that course before he or they can
graduate. This will go a long way to inculcate reading habits into the students.
20
It is becoming quite a major issue in many academic institutions that students tend to depend on
lecture notes rather done visiting the library for information. As a result, management of academic
institutions should caution faculty staff to prepare only handouts for students and they will complement
it with further research in the library.
Again, it is recommended that faculty staff should engage students in several assignments and
presentations and these should form a greater part of the assessment process for students. Currently,
the examination takes 70% and assignments take only 30%. When this trend is reversed, it will help
students to acquire more skills in searching for information than adopting the “chew and pour”
syndrome.
Finally, it is recommended that parents should help their children cultivate their reading skills when they
are young so that it becomes part and parcel of their life. Today, there are many community libraries
where children can be encouraged to go and read novels and fiction. When this is done, it will help
them express themselves well and write good English which will eventually lead to better academic
performance shortly.
