Poetry Class 12: Definition, Steps, Types, and Poetic Devices.

Poetry has been an important part of literature for nearly four thousand years. Poetry, like other forms of literature, helps to communicate ideas, express emotions, and create imagery. Poets select words for their meaning and acoustics, then arrange them to create a meter. Some poems use rhyme schemes, with two or more lines ending in similar-sounding words.

Definition of Poetry

Poetry conveys an idea or story through the use of specific, poetic language. Poems may have rhyming lines and meter, which refers to the rhythm and emphasis of a line based on syllable beats. Poems may also be freeform, which means they lack a conventional structure.
A stanza is the primary structural unit of a poem. A stanza, like a paragraph in prose, is a collection of lines relating to the same idea or subject. Use the number of lines in a stanza to split it. A couplet, for instance, is a stanza of two lines.

Poetic Devices and elements

Poetic devices are used by a poet to create effects in poetry, and they are called literary devices, such as structure, rhythm, grammar, and verbal and visual elements. It is a style used by poets of different ages to create appealing effects in their poems.

Poetry can be sung like a song and can catharsis human emotions in different ways:

  • The words are repeated within a line or stanza. The poet creates imagination and suspense by using alliteration.
  • Consonance: The poet repeats different consonant sounds as compared to vowels.
  • Musical sounds are repeated to convey the musical feeling to the reader.

Rhythm: Poets produce rhythmic sounds to create a musical or rhythmic sound.

  • Repetition: the use of repeated words to convey meaning or to emphasise a point.
  • It brings music to the poem by using words that produce the same sounds to give the reader musical effects.
  • It conveys the intention of the poet by using symbolic words that could have a larger meaning to the reader.
  • Allusion: It is a brief description of something, like a character, historical events, or some mythological characters.
  • To compare the two things is to send a message to the reader clearly. Symbolism is used to convey a different or greater meaning.
  • Paradox: The poet uses some contradictory statements to convey the meaning.
  • Personification: The poet compares some human things to non-human things to convey meaning.
  • Puns are types of jokes that have different meanings than what the words or phrases appear to be.
  • Metaphor: It is a way of describing things in such a way that it is not true in a literary sense but conveys the meaning. Some additional features are added with the help of metaphor in the poem.
