Active vs. Passive Voice for CUET English: 100 MCQs

Active vs. Passive Voice for CUET English

Basic Theoretical Concepts Active vs. Passive Voice for CUET English

What is Voice?

Voice is a grammatical category that describes the relationship between the action (verb) and the subject or object in a sentence. English has two voices: Active and Passive.

Active Voice

  • Definition: The subject performs the action expressed by the verb.
  • Structure: Subject + Verb + Object (SVO).
  • Example: “She writes a letter.”
    • Subject (She) performs the action (writes) on the object (a letter).
  • Characteristics: Direct, concise, and emphasizes the doer.

Passive Voice

  • Definition: The subject receives the action, and the doer (agent) is either omitted or mentioned with “by.”
  • Structure: Subject + Auxiliary Verb (be) + Past Participle (V3) + (by + Agent).
  • Example: “A letter is written by her.”
    • Subject (A letter) receives the action (is written), and the agent (her) is optional.
  • Characteristics: Focuses on the action or recipient, less emphasis on the doer.

Key Rules for Conversion

  1. Identify SVO: Swap the subject and object.
  2. Verb Transformation: Use a form of “be” (is, was, are, etc.) + past participle (V3).
  3. Tense Consistency: Maintain the original tense (e.g., present → is/are + V3, past → was/were + V3).
  4. Agent: Add “by + agent” if the doer is specified; omit if irrelevant.
  5. Pronoun Case: Adjust pronouns (e.g., “She” → “her,” “I” → “me”).

When to Use Each Voice

  • Active: For clarity, emphasis on the doer, or dynamic tone (e.g., “The team won the match”).
  • Passive: When the action or recipient matters more, or the doer is unknown/irrelevant (e.g., “The match was won”).

CUET Relevance

CUET English tests voice through Error Spotting (identify incorrect voice usage) and Sentence Improvement (convert active to passive or vice versa). Mastery of tense, structure, and context is key.
