English Grammar

English Grammar is important because it is language that allows us to talk about language. Grammar describes the various types of words and word groups that comprise sentences in any language. Even as children, we can put sentences together — we can all do grammar. However, knowing about grammar entails being able to discuss how sentences are constructed, as well as the various types of words and word groups that comprise sentences. And understanding grammar provides a window into the human mind and our incredibly complex mental capacity.

Grammar is associated with errors and correctness. However, understanding grammar helps us understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear, interesting, and precise. When we and our students closely read the sentences in poetry and stories, we can incorporate grammar into our discussions. Knowing grammar entails discovering that all languages and dialects follow grammatical patterns.
