UP Board Model Question Paper 2023-24 English Class 12, Section-A –Reading
Q-1 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow
The shift in the mindset of India’s younger generation is quite visible. While
they are patriotic, prepared to join any movement, march waving political
flags, join Facebook groups, they are not, in most cases, convinced by India’s
culture. In fact, they ask questions that evidence their dissatisfaction with and
disinterest in what we call culture, values and ethics. “Why do we live in a joint
family?” “I believe in God but not in temples or pooja”. “Why can my parents
not understand me?” They are turning from obedient to rebellious young
adults. It is an alarming note and all the same parents say, “What’s wrong with
our children? They are going astray.”
If you ask an elderly Indian,”How are you?” the chances are your question will
be answered, “By God’s grace everything is fine.” This is the fruit of culture.
Deep satisfaction despite ups and downs of daily life. India’s values have kept
India strong and united despite thousands of years of invasions. However the
youth of today are being raised differently from those in previous generations.
Information is at their finger tips. Give them scientific, rational, pragmatic
reasons. The values and the ethics of centuries ago are just as valid and
applicable today as then. We only have to explain them differently.
Q-(a) What change in the mindset of the Indian youth is visible now a days? 3
Q-(b) What is the conflict between the parents and children? 3

Q- (c) Indian culture has influenced our attitude by instilling deep satisfaction and resilience in the face of challenges, as seen in the elderly’s response of attributing well-being to divine grace. Q- (d) To bring the youth back to their cultural roots, it is essential to provide them with scientific, rational, and pragmatic explanations of traditional values and ethics, making them relevant in the modern context. Q-e (i) The word from the passage that means ‘agreed’ is ‘convinced’. (ii) The phrase in the passage that means ‘a warning sign’ is ‘It is an alarming note’. Q-2 .Write an article on any one of the following topics in about 100 –150 words- 10
a) Digital India
Embracing Digital India: Progressing Towards a Forward-thinking Country
In this age of lightning-fast technical development, the idea of “Digital India” has become a revolutionary idea that is changing the face of the country. India is experiencing a paradigm shift toward a digitalized society as a result of the government’s ambitious efforts and the growing adoption of digital technologies.
Digital infrastructure, e-governance, digital empowerment, and digital literacy are just a few of the elements that make up “Digital India.” By giving all residents, regardless of location or socioeconomic background, access to information and services, it seeks to close the digital divide.
The widespread use of smartphones, internet access, and digital platforms has brought about a transformation in a number of industries, including banking, healthcare, education, and government. The effects of Digital India are numerous, ranging from digital payment systems that allow cashless transactions to online education platforms that facilitate distant study.
More efficiency, accountability, and transparency have resulted from the streamlining of administrative procedures brought about by programs like Aadhaar, Digital Locker, and e-governance portals. Digital India is opening the door for a more inclusive and participatory democracy by using technology to empower citizens and provide public services.
However, coordinated efforts are required to solve issues like cybersecurity, infrastructure shortages, and digital literacy in order to fully achieve the potential of Digital India. Assuring data privacy, fostering innovation, and empowering marginalized communities are all essential components of creating a digital environment that is safe, secure, and open to all.
To sum up, Digital India offers a huge chance to use technology to advance socioeconomic growth and strengthen the nation. India can leapfrog other nations in the digital era and become a knowledge-based economy by embracing digitization and promoting innovation.
b) Joint Family System –Need of the Hour
Title: Fostering Relationships and Values to Revive the Joint Family System
In today’s world where individualism frequently trumps community living, the united family structure stands out as a symbol of solidarity, stability, and custom. The joint family system, which has its origins firmly ingrained in Indian culture, represents the spirit of unity and group responsibility.
The need to revive the joint family system is greater than ever in today’s fast-paced culture of nuclear families and dwindling social ties. For people of all ages, the joint family structure creates a loving environment, enhances familial ties, and promotes a sense of belonging.
Additionally, the joint family system encourages intergenerational learning, in which knowledge is transferred from older people to younger ones, promoting qualities of cooperation, respect, and empathy. It also acts as a social safety net, providing members with care for the aged and vulnerable as well as emotional support and financial stability.
Moreover, the joint family system provides a sense of community and belongingness in a society where social isolation, mental health problems, and fractured communities are commonplace. It enhances the social fabric by offering a venue for rituals, celebrations, and shared experiences.
In summary, the joint family system exemplifies the values of harmonious families, supportive relationships, and cultural preservation. We can strengthen family bonds, preserve our cultural legacy, and create resilient communities that flourish on compassion and solidarity by embracing and reviving this time-honored custom.

Subject: Growing Fitness Craze Among Youth
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my views on the growing fitness craze among today’s youth, which I believe is a positive and encouraging trend that deserves more attention and support from our society.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable surge in the number of young people actively participating in various fitness activities, such as gym workouts, running, cycling, yoga, and sports. This increased interest in physical fitness is commendable, as it reflects a shift towards healthier lifestyles and a greater awareness of the importance of staying fit and active.
Regular exercise not only contributes to better physical health but also has numerous mental and emotional benefits, including stress reduction, improved mood, and increased self-confidence. By embracing fitness as a lifestyle choice, young people are not only investing in their own well-being but also setting a positive example for future generations.
Moreover, the growing fitness culture among youth has the potential to tackle pressing public health issues such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and related chronic diseases. As a society, we should encourage and support initiatives that promote physical activity and make fitness accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
I urge policymakers, educators, parents, and community leaders to prioritize investments in recreational facilities, sports programs, and public spaces that encourage physical activity. Additionally, media outlets like yours play a crucial role in promoting awareness and highlighting success stories related to fitness and health.
In conclusion, I believe that the growing fitness craze among youth is a positive trend that should be celebrated and nurtured. By encouraging and supporting young people in their fitness journey, we can build a healthier, happier, and more resilient society.
