Today we know about each and every part of the world. There is no land or sea that is not known to us. Man has explored every corner of the world, and he knows all the ways and routes
from anywhere to everywhere in the world. He can reach from one place to the other as safely, easily and quickly as he likes. He has maps to guide him and fastest means of transport to
carry him. But for ages most of the world was unknown to man. To begin with, he lived in caves. Then he came out of caves and started making homes in little corners of forests or behind the hills. He was afraid of wild animals and also of the clouds and the winds. He offered prayers and sacrifices to gods who, he thought, controlled the clouds and the winds. But, slowly through long centuries, men began to explore what lay beyond their caves, hills and forests where they had their homes. They went in their boats, first on the rivers and then across the seas. At first they remained close to the shore and each new voyager went a little farther than the previous one.

A vast blanket of pollution stretching across South Asia is cutting down sunlight by 10 percent over India, damaging agriculture, modifying rainfall patterns and putting hundreds of thousands of people at risk, according to a new study. The startling findings of scientists working with the United Nations Environment Programme indicate that the spectacular economic growth seen in this part of the world in the past decade may soon falter as a result of pollution. Research carried out in India indicates that the haze caused by pollution might be reducing winter rice harvests by as much as 10 percent, the report said. “Acids in the haze may, by falling as acid rain, have the potential to damage crops and trees. Ash falling on leaves can aggravate the impact of reduced sunlight on earth’s surface. The pollution that is forming the haze could be leading to several hundred of thousands of premature deaths as a result of higher level of respiratory diseases,” it said. Results from seven cities in India alone, including Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata, estimate that air pollution was annually responsible for 24000 premature deaths in the early 1990s.

Ans. Anees Jung goes to Seemapuri, situated on the periphery of Delhi yet miles away from it. People came to Seemapuri in 1971, and the Saheb family was one of them. 10,000 ragpickers are living in Seemapuri. Seemapuri is devoid of all facilities like sewage, drainage, and sanitation. There is no drinking water in the colony. She further asks about the reason for leaving their country. “Garbage to them is gold”. They make both ends meet by collecting garbage. Children had a different angel for collecting garbage. “I sometimes find a rupee, even a ten-rupee note.” Saheb was fond of tennis, and he used to go to the club to watch the playing boys. Q. (ii) What is distinctive about Umberto Eco’s academic writing style ?
Ans. Umberto Eco explains his way of writing in Part B of “The Interview,” Eco finds the time to write. Firstly, he tells Mukund that people feel that I am writing “many things,” but in reality, “I am always doing the same thing.” His philosophical interests in his academic work, novels, and children’s books are about non-violence and peace. He considers all these as “a bunch of ethical and philosophical interests.”
Secondly, he tells his secret of writing in “empty spaces” and he eliminates these empty spaces which are called “interstices”. He calls the waiting time of the lift an “empty space” in which he gets enough time to think about what he wants to write. Thus, Eco finds the time to write so much.
Q. (iii) Name the poets who visited Gemini Studios.

Q. (i) Do you think the poet advocates total in activity and death ? (Keeping Quiet)
Ans. The poet’s emphasis on stillness doesn’t mean complete inaction in all things. He wants calmness in all things to give relief to the Earth and the people who don’t understand the importance of self-realisation. They don’t have enough time to understand their problems. Fishermen are not going to harm whales when we stop our actions for a second. The salt workers will get time to check their hands. He further requests the people who are engaged in green wars to stop such activities and to work together with the people. His emphasis is not on total “inactivity” but on silence, where we can introspect ourselves. He wants people to be happy and feel attached. This quietness will help us to remove our sadness and anxiety. Therefore, stillness is not total inactivity but a balance between action and silence.

Q. Why did the Tiger King take a vow to kill one hundred tigers ?
Ans.
In The Tiger King, Kalki criticizes the rich people for being indifferent toward wild animals. The whole story revolves around the tiger king, who is the chief protagonist of the story. The title explains the intention of the author. The story is a satire on the conceit of the people who are in power. How can a boy of ten days old challenge the tigers? The author explains the flattery of the astrologer in front of His Highness, the Tiger King, who became the king at the age of twenty. He starts killing tigers to save his life.
He was not killed by the tiger but by a nail in a wooden tiger and got a heavy infection and died. The author employs dramatic irony in the last. The Tiger King is killed not by a tiger but by a simple rusted nail. This is a satirical situation that the author used to prove his point that we must respect wild animals, otherwise our death will be by a small thing and not by the wild animal itself.
